Other than what was stated above, a media converter is simply a device that once installed in a network, will take the signal from one medium and convert it to a different medium so it can flow to the other side of the network with no problems. For instance, if coax cable was used up to a point and the network administrator had no more coax cable; he could simply install a media converter and install fiber optics to go the rest of the way. Or if the network administrator is trying to connect two different types of networks (e.g. token ring, star), he would install a media converter between the two networks to allow the signal to get through to both networks. This way everyone can share the signal and what information is included in that signal.
