What exactly IS a “finish” carpenter anyways?
A complex mix of elements combine to create finish carpentry. The finish carpenter’s basic responsibility is to install all the “finished” details on a project. He hangs the doors, installs all the millwork, builds the stairs and installs the hardware. A finish carpenter must be familiar with all the trades working on the project. He must be aware of cabinet heights, switch and outlet locations, flooring thicknesses, plumbing locations, appliance dimensions, stair / rail codes, fireplace codes, handicap access codes, heating and cooling – even the dimension of homeowners’ clothing and books- the list goes on. A finish carpenter is responsible for making his product look and function perfectly before he walks away from it. If he finds that the walls are “not plumb” or are “out of square” or the floors aren’t level, he must trouble-shoot the problem and come up with a solution that allows his particular project to turn out perfectly.
