What exactly happened regarding actions by government/courts/Society/Macfarlane Trust (MFT) around 1987/90/91 that led to the MFT being set up and further public money being made available?
The Trust was set up by the government in 1988, following lobbying by the Haemophilia Society. The Trust was intended to be a hardship fund for those infected with HIV through receiving infected products from the NHS and the government gave the Trust £10m. In 1990 the government offered ex gratia payments to all those affected of £20,000 each costing the government around £24m. In 1991 the litigation was settled and a further £44m was paid to the fund to compensate those haemophiliacs infected with HIV. Between 1993 and 2001 an additional £15m has been paid into the fund.
