Health Insurance Companies are the ones who provide health care. They sell their different plans to employers and, or the private sector, meaning individuals, families and so on. They offer PPO’s, or HMO’s. The old 80%/20% plan doesn’t exist anymore. There are some employers who self insure their employees, but still use a health insurance company. In other words, the employer pays the medical claims, instead of the insurance company. That’s the importance they play in this game. Without them, there would be no health insurance. That’s why national health care reform is so important and why the insurance companies are fighting it tooth and nail. They don’t want competition from national health care.
