The word mediator can be used in a lot of ways. If, for example, you were having a spat with a friend, a 3rd friend could step in and talk to both of you and try to work out whatever the problem is. That 3rd friend would be acting as a mediator…a go-between. In an every day sense, a mediator is just someone who works out a middle ground in a dispute.
