What exactly does a graphic designer do?
Create visual ideas and solutions to promote and advertise pretty much anything. You could be designing corporate ID, brochures, advertising, packaging, exhibitions… I’ve designed concepts and layouts for the web but generally hand it over to a web designer to put it together. These days though agencies/studios do like people with experience of both. We never get a lot of time to draw out ideas by hand anymore and tend to be in front of the Mac all day to get jobs out to the clients. I’d recommend going for a Junior Designer position to start with otherwise you may find yourself thrown in at the deep end. You can move up pretty quick once you have experience under your belt. Trying for work experience in design agencies can help too. I know times are tough but if you impress someone you never know and it’s all experience for your cv. Also if your working in ‘design for print’ you’ll need to know Quark, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat etc. and learning how to prep and supply
