What exactly do the nutrition descriptions on the front of the food packages mean?
Nutrition descriptions, such as “no added sugar”, are optional and up to the food manufacturer. They usually appear on the front of food labels to be used as a quick comparison. Here are a few label terms with their description: • Reduced describes a food with at least 25% less calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol or sodium than a comparable food. • High is an amount that is 20% or more of the Daily Value for a nutrient, such as “high in calcium.” • Light is a food with one-third fewer calories or 50% less fat than the traditional version.
