What exactly do Osteopaths do?
Osteopaths use finely tuned observatory and palpatory (touch) skills to seek out factors that have predisposed to an injury, and the factors that are maintaining it. By assessing the whole body, including posture, and careful consideration of extraneous influences that may affect the body, Osteopaths are able to pinpoint the exact cause of pain, and are able to explain this to patients so they understand why they are in pain. Osteopaths then treat by working out a detailed treatment plan, and then using a wide range of techniques to carry this out, including articulation (movement) of joints, soft tissue work, and mobilisation of restrictions in joints. Advice is then given to aid recovery which include ways of reducing inflammation, and stimulating recovery by use of heat and ice packs, and stretching and strengthening certain muscle groups in order to create a balance within the body, and prevent pain returning.
