What, exactly, did Charles Evans Hughes DO that was so significant?
Charles Evans Hughes had a varied & largely successful Carree but is perhaps best known as a Supreme Court Justice from 1930 to 1941 during which time he wrangled with President Franklin Roosevelt over many issues most notably fighting FDR’s plan to reorganize the Supreme Court in 1937. One could argue that Hughes most significant act was to elevate the Supreme Court to a level of status & prestige that made it clearly an equal to the Legislative & Executive branches of Government. Hughes was mainly known for having a very clear legal mind, for taking complex issues and rendering them understandable to a majority of people, example, his statement that “”We are under a Constitution, but the Constitution is what the judges say it is.” Turning point, hmmm, there were several, but most likely LOOSING the Presidential election of 1916.
