What exactlly do a veterinary technician do?
A veterinary technician is a person who work in the veterinary medical field as a skilled, educated aid to the veterinarian. In most states veterinary technicians are required to have a degree in veterinary technology from an American Veterinary Medical Assoc. accredited college degree program and have passed at least the Veterinary Technician National Exam if not a state board exam as well. Veterinary technicians fill many roles including providing nursing care for hospitalized and surgical patients, collecting biological samples, running diagnostic testing, administering and monitoring anesthesia, surgical assisting, client education, maintaining medical records, taking radiographs, performing ultrasounds, etc etc. While they may also clean cages and perform other menial tasks necessary to keep the patients cared for and the hospital in working order, they are not unskilled, untrained or uneducated individuals.
