What evidence is there that the volcanic ash is actually blowing over the UK?
Meteorological observations have been picking up evidence of ash dust both in the sky and in small amounts at the surface since the end of last week: This includes • Sensors equipment at Cardington, Bedfordshire and Exeter, Devon picking up airborne particles. • Met Office stations including Lyneham and Benson have reported small deposits at the surface. Latest observations across the UK can be seen on the dust observations. • A low level flight (3,500 feet) in south west Wales encountered reduced visibility and strong sulphur smell and aborted the flight. It must be made clear that in many cases these particles will not be visible in the sky to the human eye from the surface; unless it falls to the ground. A research aircraft observed ash in UK airspace on Friday and in Finland, a flight on Friday reported melted ash in its engine. We cannot advise on the particulate level across the UK as this is likely to be continually changing and could be different from region to region.
