A number of studies have shown a significant positive correlation between bibliometric indices and peer review judgements (see, for example, the scoping study by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies). We also have expert advice that when bibliometric analysis is undertaken the research groups in question find the outcomes acceptable. One of the aims of the pilot is to establish that the bibliometric indicator can produce results that command the confidence of the sector.
