What evidence is there of matriarchal societies?

Mental Distortion asked: I’m doing a study over this, and I’m quite knowledgable of various civilizations where women enjoyed higher status than cattle in some ancient patriarchal societies. These include the Minoan civilization, where women and goddess dominated religion. They had a heightened role in Sparta for breeding purposes, they had records of significance in neolithic Celtic civilization, and there’s some myths relating to the Amazon women…and some speculation that there may have been matriarchal societies in prehistoric Europe and Asia. I’m reading the book When God Was A Woman, and it sounds more like a bitter feminist pushing a girl power agenda rather than concrete evidence. Apparently it is not well documented…but I was wondering if there is any ground concrete evidence that there has ever been a matriarchal society comparable to mesopotamian and Greco-Roman societies that we learn about fron basic history.
