Many feel the problem with American Idol is the infamous line, “It’s a singing competition”. Unfortunately, popular music (pop/rock, rap or country) is not a singing competition, but a performing competition. This year was a perfect example: Blake Lewis is a much better performer than Jordin Sparks. Jordin had a better voice. Jordin won, but Lewis is going to have a longer career. The same happened last year. Elliott Yamin and Chris Daughtry went on to big hit albums even though Daughtry didn’t make the final 3, and Yamin finished 3rd. Meanwhile, Taylor Hicks did the album that Bo Bice would have done, Kat McPhee ended up in a Stuff pantyhose shoot that left only a little to the imagination. Winning can catapult a great performer. It can also showcase one who doesn’t finish in the top. Josh G
