Nothing really happened to him. Snuffy Smith and his hillbilly humor just became the focus of the comic strip. Once in a great while (the last time I am aware of was some years ago) Barney Google shows up in the comic strip (with or without his horse Spark Plug) to pay Smuffy a visit.
