What events during World War 1 undermined civil liberties?

The biggest thing that undermined civil liberties in the United States during the First World War is President Wilson’s decision to get us involved in it in the first place. In my view, it was completely unnecessary for us to get involved in a war primarily between inbred European royalty who never learned how to play well together. If we had not gone to war, there would have no issues relating to treason, espionage, sabotage, etc., from our point of view.
