What Event Started World War One?
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria in Sarajevo is widely regarded as the event that triggered the beginning of World War One. The countries who were, during “The War to End All Wars” (it didn’t) our enemies were Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. Ironically, Italy and Japan, who were our enemies during the Second World War, were our allies during “The Great War.” Among our allies during that war was Russia (the Soviet Union didn’t exist yet), the British Empire, and France. (This would be the first time we would save their ‘foie gras’ from the Germans; repeating the need to do so in World War II….which gives rise to the joke, “How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?
