What european countries colonized haiti?
The current Republic of Haiti is in the western part of the island called La Española. La Española was first colonized by the spaniards, but they were installed mainly in the eastern part of the island (the current Dominican Republic). Taking advantage of this fact, some french buccaneers settled the western coast triggering the french reclamations over this part of La Española. In 1697, in the treaty of Ryswick that settled the Nine Year’s war or Great Alliance War between France and a coalition of other europeans powers formed by Spain, England, the Holly Roman Empire and the United Provinces, the Kingdom of Spain ceded the west part of La Española to the French Kingdom. It would be a part of the Fench colonial empire until his independence in 1804.
