Mechanical engineers are best equipped to design roller coasters. It also involves a civil engineering, math, physics, business, ergonomics, and graphic design among other disciplines. You could say roller coasters are designed by roller coaster engineers.

Either a mechanical engineer or a civil engineer with a strong structural engineering back ground. I would think it would be a combination of several engineers. But I bet you find more Structural Civil Engineers. Those guys design and build structures that have to stand up to various loads. Typical ME don’t do that.
