Hi Emily. If you are after EGG LAYING tropical fish that guard them with parental behaviour and not EGG SCATTERING tropical fishes that have nothing to do with the eggs or fry after spawning, other than sometimes trying to eat them, then the easiest ones are going to be amongst the large family of cichlids, the two I would suggest are the common Convict cichlid and Jewel cichlid, because these fish are so easy to breed they are one of the cheapest cichlid fish around, and because of this they are not worth much if you want to sell them. IMO they are the easiest and the best fish to start off your egg laying fish interest. The best thing with these two suggestions is they will breed even if the water parameters for them are slightly off ideal, they are a hardy fish that want to reproduce for the survival of there species. I have a pair of Jewels in my 8ft tank that have fry every 4-6 weeks. After the fry are up and swimming, and the sad desperate attempts of the parents trying to defend
