Dr. Agatston: Paxil and other anti-depressants can be associated with weight gain of several pounds for unknown reasons. Where there is an important behavioral component to weight gain, these medications may actually help weight loss. I would not change these medications when starting the diet unless it is recommended by your physician. The diet is compatible with taking birth control pills. There are sometimes very large fluctuations of fluid retention during the menstrual cycle. It is important not to misinterpret fluctuations in fluid as a rapid increase or decrease of fat mass. This is one reason why we suggest weighing ourselves once a week or less.
