What effects do ovarian cysts have on pregnancy? How do keep it from rupturing?
Ovarian cysts are very common (I have one). They are also common during pregnancy (1 in 1000 women will have them). In most cases, the effects are minimal and unnoticable. The problem arises in the case of a very large cyst. The size of the cyst can obviously be detected during an ultrasound. In the case of a large cyst the possibility of it rupturing is higher, and if this occurs could cause severe pain and in the worst instances it can lead to a miscarriage. The way to prevent this happening, in the case of a cyst of a significant size, is typically key-hole surgery to remove it. This can be done in the second trimester of surgery. In the case of a small cyst, the doctor may advise that no surgery is necessary but may want to perform a C-section when the baby is due so that the cyst can be removed at the same time.
