0

The effects of AdvoCare Spark&#174 Energy Drink flavors (Citrus, Fruit Punch, Grape, Mandarin Orange, and Cherry) on blood sugar levels were compared with those of a standard 50-gram glucose intake. Following ingestion of each product, blood sugar levels were determined periodically for two hours. The results for each drink are presented in the graph below. As can be seen in the graph, following consumption of a Spark Energy Drink, blood sugar levels increased from approximately 88 mg/dL to approximately 106 to 114 mg/dL with the maximum increase occurring between 15 and 30 minutes. The maximum increase was produced by Citrus Spark while the lowest increase was produced by Mandarin Orange Spark. Blood sugar levels returned to baseline for all products within 60 minutes. Although Spark Energy Drinks do not contain free sugar, they do contain maltodextrin which is broken down into sugar (glucose) and absorbed. The glycemic loads of Spark Energy Drinks fall in the lower half of the medium
