What effects did evacuation (the blitz) have on children and parents?
It depends on where you lived and in what conditions before evacuation took place. A lot of very poor children from the East End had a great time and discovered things they never knew existed such as hot baths and gardens but as a general rule it was very upsetting as most, if not all evacuees had never been away from their parents before. Parents were justifiably upset in most cases. My Mother evacuated us but brought us back home after only two weeks because she couldn’t stand to be away from us and had also heard some horrific stories regarding the treatment of evacuee children. We were all glad to be reunited I can tell you. Some evacuees never returned to their home town after the war but stayed where they were.
