Mind altering substances can have many affects on the brain. Some say that marijuana can heighten creativity. In my opinion drugs can alter your state of mind and allow you to view the world from a new or different perspective. From birth we are taught to think and act in certain ways. The purpose of this is so we can function productively in society. The problem is that we sometimes take the programming too well and we lose the ability to think for ourselves. We develop preconceived notions about the world we live in and go about our lives. Some would argue that altering your state of mind allows you to see things from a clear or fresh point of view. This can make you capable of critical thought as Carlin displayed so well. He took a step back and saw the world for what it was, not what he had been told it was.
