What effect does acid stratification have on a car battery?
Acid stratification puts the stoichiometric relationship within a lead/acid battery out of balance, which has a serious impact on the battery’s performance. What happens is that there is mostly water in the top third of the battery, while the bottom third has a high concentration of sulfuric acid. This causes premature corrosion of the lower part of the lead plates. This leads to a degeneration of the active mass or surfaces (dead lead) in both the upper and lower parts of the battery.
