Aspiring graphic designers need to have at least a bachelor’s degree to get into an entry-level position, however, an associate degree may help some professionals get into a technical position, that’s one that allows less creative input. During the years of education and training, graphic designers should take advantage of any internship opportunities that allow the student to create pieces for a professional portfolio. A good portfolio is probably the number one contributor to getting someone a job in graphic design. Bachelor degree programs take about four years to complete and provide both training in graphic design and a broad liberal arts education. Associate degrees and certificate programs in graphic design take between two and three years to complete and focus on the technical aspects of graphic design, but include very few liberal arts courses.
