What education is best for an industrial automation carrer?

I am currently employed as a production supervisor and am interested in directing my career towards industrial automation. I was wondering if any one could offer any help as to what degree/program would be best for me to acheive this. I have been looking into instrumentation and controls and electronics engineering degrees. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
