What draws non-Navajos to Navajo Land to work now?
There is no single reason. For some, it is a level of pay that is often higher than off the reservation. Many school teachers and administrators come here to gain experience before transferring to other districts in the state. Some, like a physician at an area hospital, wanted to work over-seas, but his wife did not. The region was as close to being in a foreign country, while still remaining in the United States as they could find. Some families enjoy the people and the country. It is more favorable than living in a city. Some people have religious reasons and believe they can make more of a difference here, than they can elsewhere. Many Indian Health Service employees take this posting after they complete their residency, to gain experience while at the same time, earning credit that decreases the amount that they must repay for government loans they took out to complete their education.
