VLT means “Visible Light Transmission”. It represents the ratio of the amount of total visible light that is allowed to pass through the tint. For example 35%, VLT allows 35% of the total visible light to pass through the tint. 5% VLT only allows 5% visible light to pass through and so is therefore a darker tint.
