Upjetting is necessary on mopeds when you add after market parts to give it more horsepower and accell. Some mopeds , such as the honda hobbit from 1978 came in a 20mph version and a 30mph version. The differences were things like restrictor washers in intakes, restrictors in the exhaust, slightly bigger carbs, and larger JETS. These larger jets were needed cause the moped had more power. I have a 1978 Puch Maxi. I had it stock and rode it around, but then put a performance exhaust on it. It gave it 8mph top speed boost and lot better accell in mid and top range. With this increased power i had to upjet to give the motor more gas for the increased power it had. I then put a 70cc top end kit on it along with piston, replacing the stock 50cc. This topped me out at about 45 and had worlds better hill climbing and accelleration. With the increased power i had to further upjet.
