The insignia “UL” is short for Underwriters Laboratories, a company that rigorously tests products and goods to determine their hazardous qualities and, in the case of fire extinguishers, to determine their effectiveness (when used correctly) at fighting a hazardous fire. Each manufacturer submits its extinguishers for testing by Underwriters Laboratories.
