What does UHIP stand for?
UHIP is an equivalent of the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) which is a health care program that covers residents of Ontario. Since international students and their families are not eligible for OHIP, UHIP was designed to provide them with the same health care services that Ontario residents have under OHIP. Most Ontario universities participate in UHIP, and it is mandatory for all international students. The UHIP policy year, as determined by the insurer, Sun Life Financial, runs every September 1 to August 31 of each year. That is why all international students are required to purchase UHIP coverage for 12 months.
