What does treatment involve?
There are virtually no side effects, and there is no pain associated with 131I treatment. The delivery of iodine is targeted to the overactive thyroid gland(s); the cat does not experience any radiation side effects at the normal therapy doses used to treat hyperthyroidism. Treatment is usually done the day the cat is admitted to the hospital. During their hospitalization, cats are housed in individual enclosures (30″ x 30″ x 24″) in an isolation room in the clinic. All units have individually exhausted air, so there is not cross contamination between cats. Fresh food and water are available at all times. Please inform us of any likes or dislikes or special dietary needs that your cat may have, so we can make their stay as comfortable as possible.
Treatment often involves from one to three visits to our participating dentists. A dentist or endodontist will remove the diseased pulp during the treatment. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed. Here’s how your tooth is saved through treatment: • An opening is made through the crown of the tooth. • An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber. • The pulp is then removed. The root canal(s) is cleaned and shaped to a form that can be filled. • The pulp is removed and the root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped. • Medications may be put in the pulp chamber and root canal(s) to help get rid of bacteria and prevent infection. • A temporary filling will be placed in the crown opening to protect the tooth between dental visits. Root canal therapy requires up to three visits to the dentist. The treatment will progress through the steps outlined below. 1. An opening is created through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber. 2. The dental pulp is removed. 3. The root canal(s) is cleaned, enlarged, and shaped in order to be filled. 4. Medications may be inserted into the pulp chamber and root canal(s) so as to eliminate harmful bacteria and prevent further infection. 5. Your dentist may decide to drain the tooth by leaving the tooth uncovered for a couple of days. Otherwise a temporary filling will be used over the opening to protect the tooth before the next visit to the dentist. Medicine to control the infection may also be given to you.
