What does Trace H2S mean?” and “Why does XI round trace H2S to 100 ppm?”
The EUB’s dataset does not provide a number for trace H2S. All that is provided is a “*” in the H2S field to indicate trace. According to the regulations that were released in 2003, it is a requirement to acknowledge this as a sour gas well. Without the benefit of a real number the XI system will round these wells up to 100 ppm (0.01% H2S) according to EUB recommendations. In some cases, you can find the actual ppm number in the remarks field in the Browse. If so, you can replace the 100 ppm (0.01% H2S) with the appropriate number. Keep in mind that depending on your flow rate in that formation, this probably will not greatly impact your application. If in fact your well has a trace concentration, the EUB considers it sour, and forces applications to be submitted accordingly.
