What does otal pay to date mean on H.M Revenue & Customs mean?

“Total pay to date” means just that. This is what your employer has paid you in wages since 6th April last. If tax had been deducted, that amount should have been showed as tax, not pay. I am not quite sure what letter HMRC would have sent you. Is this a form P45 from employer? Tax office doesn’t know wage position until employer sends in top copy of form P45, and then would only contact you in rare circumstances if something was wrong. Even then, first contact would be with employer to try to resolve first. Just because you are a student doesn’t mean you are exempt from tax deductions. All UK citizens are entitled to a tax-free annual personal allowance of £6475 a year. If you earn over that in the period 6th April to 5th April, tax will be deducted, student or not. I don’t think anybody owes anybody anything in your scenario. This is probably some form of documentary evidence of wages received in case you need it for further reference.
