What does TMJ surgery involve?
The surgery is rather a last option and does not always solve the issues. Make sure you discuss it in great depth with a surgeon. It is a very final option and is permanent whatever the result. If pain is also an issue get into a pain management programme within the local hospital or community via your GP. The medication combinations in the programme involve using very low dose antidepressants to make the analgesics more effective and they are taken at night to help you sleep better which also helps with the grinding etc etc. These low doses are not taken at an anti depressant level but do a great deal to help relieve the stress of the situation, and of course sadly the condition is linked to other factors like stress. You may be lucky enough that your max fax consultant will have an interest in the pain management side of the issue as well.
