What does this quote from Tess of the Durbervilles mean?

Well I take it to mean that the “president of the Immortals” is God and like a Greek tragedy the Gods have been playing with Tess (in the way that she was suddenly thrown from being a simple country girl into one with a heritage) and now (since she died) they stopped and that despite the role her ancestors had on her life, they were actually of no importance whatsoever and their past existence hadn’t helped her at all – no more use than the lumps of stone that they are.
