He is more or less saying that someone who is highly intelligent should be able to accept to opposing philosophies as being valid without completely blowing up. For example take someone who is very fanatical about their religion. When presented with the tenants of another religion they will automatically reject them without even giving them a second thought. Fitzgerald is saying that someone who has first rate intelligence would be able to accept the opposing viewpoint to his own without getting all bent out of shape or attacking the opposing view point out of hand just because it differs from his own.
