What does this mean HYPP N/H in a horse….help please?
You’ve had a few replies that worry me, so I feel I need to add my two cents to this question. Biscuit has a good definition of hypp, so I won’t waste my time explaining what it is. Horses are either hypp N/N, meaning that neither of their genes carry the trait, or they are hypp N/H meaning one of the two genes carry the trait, or they can be hypp H/H. Horses with two genes often seem to be more likely to have regular health problems from the condition. But what no one is telling you is – horses that carry one gene, such as this horse, still have the potential to develop serious health problems, sometimes as mature horses and totally out of the blue. If you read the seller’s ad you’ll see that even she said “this horses has never shown any signs of the condition while I’ve owned her” or something like that. In other words, this horse hasn’t had health problems YET, but they could potentially occur anytime. People have told you hypp n/h is only a problem if you want to breed the mare, b
