Justice Souter, appointed by President George H. W. Bush in 1990 has announced his intention to retire from the Supreme Court. This story has been getting a whole lot of coverage by the American media, but the effect of a replacement by Obama most likely will have few, if any, implications for the law. Though Souter is classified as a “liberal” by pundits, he is not a liberal lion of the mold of the Justice he replaced, William Brennan, Jr., but he is to the left on many cases.
