What does the UL fire rating mean on a filing cabinet or safe?
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is an independent, non-profit organization that tests a variety of products, systems, materials and devices to ensure they are safe for public use. The UL testing process measures the amount of protection an insulated safe or file cabinet will provide its contents in a fire. In order to receive an UL rating, insulated filing cabinets and safe must meet or exceed UL testing standards. For instance, the most common rating is a UL Class 350 One Hour Rating; this means, in the event of a fire, the file cabinet or safe can protect any internal paper documents from temperatures up to 1700 degrees F for one hour.
