What does the U stand for in soccer age groups?
The ‘U’ stands for under. Age groups in soccer are classified by the age of players and not the school grade that a player is in. The age cut-off date is August 1st of the current year. For example, a U10 team is a team comprised of players that are under 10 years of age by August 1st of the current year. Also, as the word ‘under’ implies, players on a team can be younger than the target age group but not older (i.e. players can ‘play up’ but not ‘down’).
