It means a person is required to return home for two-years after the J-1 status ends. However, you can apply for a waiver. ORAU/ORISE does not assist with that process, but information is available on the U.S. Department of State Web site at http://travel.state.gov. If you have trouble finding the appropriate link for the two year home physical presence requirement, please ask for clarification as the sites sometimes change. If a person applies for a waiver of the two-year home-country requirement and receives a favorable recommendation from the U.S. Department of State, he/she will only be eligible to finish the currently authorized J-1 time without extensions or transfers to a different J-1 program.
