What does the title Fifteen Mnemonic Devices stand for?
“There is a long story behind the title. I will tell it to you and you can use whatever you want. There is a well known photograph by Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray that consists of a an object placed on a shelf where it was allowed to gather dust for a long time. Then Man Ray took a close up photograph. The photograph looks like some kind of strange landscape. As you know, the material for this album dates back to 1986. Actually, some of the samples I took from live improvisations with Nick Didkovsky (Dr. Nerve) date back to 1980. So this music sat on the shelf for a long time gathering dust. So I thought I would name the album after this photograph by Duchamp and Man Ray. I thought the title was Dust Farming, so that was the first title of the album. Then a friend of mine got it wrong and called it Dusk Farming, which I thought was better. To farm light – this is very poetic. Meanwhile, I had gotten the title of the Duchamp/Ray photograph wrong!
