What Does The Term Posse Comitatus Relate To?
The Posse Comitatus Act is a piece of legislature from the United States of America. The Act was originally formulated to prevent Federal troops from (interfering with) supervising Confederate elections (vote counting etc). It has later come to be used to prevent Federal troops from acting as law enforcement, preventing the military’s involvement in civil and criminal affairs. The term ‘Federal Troops’ refers to Army, Airforce, Navy and National Guard. It also includes specialist units such as Delta Force. This does not preclude the military lending assistance to law enforcement. On occasion when the U.S Navy are used to prevent drug smuggling, armed Coast Guard officers are on hand to board the vessels, searching the cargo, engaging with the crew and making arrests.
