What does the term of OWI, OVI, DUI, OUIL, etc mean?
A. All are acronyms for what is commonly known as drunk driving. In Michigan, OWI refers to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated; OVI refers to operating a motor vehicle while visibly impaired. DUI (driving under the influence) is a more generic acronym for drunk driving, OUIL (operating under the influence of intoxicating liquor) is now know as OWI in Michigan resulting from changes in the Law in 2003.
