What does the term “Backset” mean?
Backset is the distance from the middle of the edge of the door to the center of the knob or lever handle where the spindle goes from one knob or lever through the lock or latch to the other knob or lever on the opposite side of the door. In general, Residential interior doors have a door prep requiring a 2 3/8″ backset lock or latchset. 2 3/4″ backsets are found on exterior doors in residences and interior and exterior doors in commercial applications. Other backsets are 1 3/4″ up to 18″. these are used on special applications requiring special hardware.
