What does the swing function do?
Here is a quote from an answer to this question by Stephen Golden: Swing is a feature that allows you to delay the point at which every second eighth or sixteenth note is played, depending on the swing point you select (either eighth note or sixteenth note). It’s used in a lot of country songs and some old time Church hymns (for you old timers who know what I mean). For example, 4/4 would normally sound like Daa Daa Daa Daa With swing, it would sound like Daaa Da Daaa Da (How did that sound? I’m sure it didn’t sound as good as it did when I hummed it.) Program a simple 4/4 measure with consistently playing eighth notes (For a drum track, program straight 1-3 kick drum, 2-4 snare, and high hat on ‘1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and’). Play this with swing off. Then, turn swing on and hear the difference. (I find a delay of 4 usually works well) There are many songs that don’t sound right at all unless you turn swing on. You can try to simulate it with note placement, but it’s automatic with swing.
