What does the statement “Not recognized as an essential nutrient by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles” mean?
This does NOT mean that the nutrient is not approved for use. It does mean that this nutrient has not been found to be an essential requirement for survival, therefore is being added as a supplement to the food. An excellent example of this is omega-3 fatty acids. Although some omega-3s have been found to be required, not all have; therefore, this group of nutrients must be marked with this particular statement.
